Re: Whats wrong?
Fri, October 22, 2004 - 1:59 PMYes, human connections take time. I spent my summer away, in a place of mountians, trees and the ocean. I was with family and friends feeling completely content away from here. Now I'm back, my world has reconnected. Just yesterday, I was down town shopping and hanging around - ran into not one but four different friends i haven't seen in sometime -It always happends, no matter where i go, I will run into a connection. In all fairness, I have lived here for about 17 years....I came from nowhere and didn't know a soul here. But i'm not alone here, why the other day some lady stopped my in the parking lot of a grocery and asked if I was happy, i replied half heartly that i was okay, she then, handed me a posey of beautiful flowers and told me to have a terrific day! For me, this city is one of serendipity, random kindness and comfort of the famliar and the constant...all in a laid back sorta way. Sometimes i think victoria is not for the young and the restless, its a city for those who know what they want and have obtained it. wE live in our vairious little communities and we find content in that. I have participated in various events and love how all the communities connect whilst keeping each identity individual. For example, the Sidney street market....brings out half of Sidney, its a smashing social success. I've then gone to the down town market durning the summer and seen folks from the sidney market, if its a community event one will ALWAYS run in to someone familar. I have always thought and found this city as sooo connected.
I hope you find your place here one day, I really do, and if not here - at heart.

Re: Whats wrong?
Wed, August 31, 2005 - 2:09 AMWhen i moved to Victoria 12 years ago i didn't know a soul...and it took 2 years before I felt I could phone a local person just because. White folks (like me) are very much over-represented, and it can be hard to break into the "cliques", and to stop noticing the homogeneity. Victoria seems polarized between liberal free-thinkers and conservative fuddy-duddies. In the larger picture, parking is every bit as bad as Toronto, and it's considered the parking ticket capital of the world. Construction is rampant and much of the community character of the older neighbourhoods is disappearing. Wages are lower than elsewhere on the island because so many people want to live here.
On the upside, it's an outdoor lovers paradise. The climate is Mediterranean and rarely exceeds -5c and 25c, and the forests, mountains, or beaches are very accessible; the rain shadow of the Olympic Mtns. means that it rains less than even Ottawa. A typical summer is sunny day in and day out, and most of the rain falls between October and March. So far the population is small enough that one can have the best of both worlds...anonymity and community. It's easy to run into someone you know, especially at events or downtown. There is an abundance of talented musicians but not enough venues for them.
No matter where you go there are trade-offs.
Cheers

Re: Whats wrong?
Sat, October 8, 2005 - 10:00 AMI love this city with every bit of me. I love that I can realistically expect to live car free here, the incredible connection to nature even in the city core, and the old buildings that tell our history -- both of which we take so for granted though they were preserved through local struggles. We should never forget that.
I grew up here, and having traveled the world I can think of nowhere I would rather be.
But sometimes Victoria seems plastic, too many of our dark places illuminated, too many of our rough edged painted over - disneyfied - too safe. I am a bit hostile to the wealthy "summer home" buyers and retirees who compete with locals for real estate, and to the lifestyle hungry rich who enjoy our beauty and "quaint" atmosphere and want it to remain just exactly the same, picture perfect.
This is a growing, living city filled with tolerant, laid back people. Paradise. But sometimes the roses of paradise choke out the weeds. I love the weeds too. -

Re: Whats wrong?
Sat, October 8, 2005 - 3:19 PMWe don't have enough black people or good gospel choirs here. Other than that I have very few complaints. It is becoming more mutli-cultural here however. I am glad to see some great ethiopian cooking, salsa dancing and other cultural delights enter our area... I love this town but have always thought it was missing some of the "soul" of other cities. -

Re: Whats wrong?
Fri, December 23, 2005 - 12:12 PMYes Victoria is a pretty great place, hoever the 129 million liters of raw sewage dumped into the Straits of Juan de Fuca is worrisome, not for the poop factor but the toxic cleaning agents, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, PCP's etc.
So don't eat the seafood off the beach!
The traffic is pretty bad too, but I came from a town of 300 so maybe it's relative.

Sat, December 24, 2005 - 12:34 PMApparently the wrong sewage thing isn't true anymore. I am not sure of the details but I think there is a processing area now. -

Tue, December 27, 2005 - 1:56 PMIn Saanich and Sooke there is sewage treatment, but in Victoria we dump 129 million liters a day! Holy shit!
